"A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words"

Well...we used to say..."a picture is worth a thousand words."  When we see a great photo, nowadays we say something like... "oooooh goosebumps" or simply, "no words".  If you have planned a wedding... you know it takes a village.  As florists, we work with many vendors...but I have a soft spot in my soul for the photographers.  Probably because my Dad was a photographer and I grew up waiting in his "lab" in our basement, for the next work of art.  We oooooed and awwwwed at each photo.  Now that he has passed, I am wanting to nurture that photo bug.   So, thank you to these great photographers; Eric Yerke Photography, Araya Photography, AE Photography and Hannah White Photography.   Photographers, keep sharing your work with us...The Garden Wren LOVES to share your photography. Enjoy the slide show!

Glory, Sweet Glory

I read somewhere that business owners should share their personal side.  It gives your customers a little glimpse into who you are and who they are doing business with.  Well after 11 years.... I agree.  So,  chapter "whatever..."   another story.

20 years ago, my fifth child was born.  A daughter...Anna Elizabeth.  Glory, Sweet Glory.  There are no words.  Mother, daughter...soul sister....ya ya sisters... connected together by an umbilical cord.... a shared soul, Sephora,  and one strand of hair.  LOL.  You know what I mean, Anna.

I waited many years to have another daughter.  One daughter, three boys.. and ?  Well, the match arrived.  My two daughters, my bookends...with three boys in the middle.  I couldn't have asked for more.  Blessings x 5.

This year, we walk in our own shoes.  I admit it...yes.. I am walking a little wobbly.  A year to take steps to ... what I pray...is a little,  peace and glory.  My favorite artist is Pieta Brown and she has a song, titled Glory to Glory.  I love the beat and lyrics.  When I hear this sweet tune, it reminds me of dancing days in our kitchen.  This photo was one of Anna's high school graduation photos taken by a great photographer, really a photojournalist (who should be working for National Geographic) .....and soulful friend. Um, ok...I'm pretty sure she took this photo for me.    I love her.  Check out Araya Photography.

So, here we go, Anna....happy birthday! It's time to tell your story!   Let's dance!

There Comes a Time

I suppose if I were to share that Neil Young was (and still is) a favorite artist, it would reveal a glimpse into my mid to late 70's.  Oh well.  Since 2004, The Garden Wren has opened the doors to many interesting folks.  What has always amazed me is who finds their way in.  Since we are a small little working studio... people discover us by word of mouth or by chance.  Guess what I find interesting is that 99% of the time...it is a perfect fit.  Someone looking for a little yarn, a little help with a knitting question, a floral bouquet, a unique wedding experience.  Then, it turns to something.   Something well beyond the customer and retail experience.  Isn't this why I opened the studio? In 2004,  I was looking for something too.  Raising five children, a remarriage.  Wow, it took a lot out of this gal.

So, when I had the sweetest ever yarn customer mention opening the studio to a Monday morning knitting group, I  said, hmmm, let me think about it.  We tried it and like Noah's Arc...(kinda), one by one we gathered.  All bringing different tastes, projects, skills and personalities.  We are women who have raised our children into adulthood.  Some are grandmas, or waiting hopefully for the day.  We have experienced many accomplishments, hardships, and much yet unknown. Yet, we gather, share conversation, patterns, yarn,  and more importantly...encouragment, a smile, a hug and maybe a little extra twinkle, cuz we know, like the song," Comes a Time"....this old world does keep spinning around....dropped stitches,  and all...and yes, it's a wonder with everything life can give us...it's a wonder tall trees ain't layin' down.  There comes a time when we need a little extra support.  We are tall trees, and I love the support from each one of the Monday Morning knitters.

Feeling Blessed.

Simply, Sweet, Sweetness

Lots of thinking time this year...even with a busy, wonderful wedding season...it has been quite the year.  I always seem to have a mission, a cause, an irritation, a passion, a something...it is always something.  This year, I spent more time reflecting all these somethings that come and go.  I have come to a few conclusions.  Let me know if you agree.

What happened to simple living?  Everything has to be BIG, and BIGGY size.  Our houses, our cars, (I mean, if I have one more black Silverado on my VW bugs rear end when I try to turn in my driveway, REALLY! - see, already irritated.) When asked if I want to BIGGY SIZE this,  I just want to say, "are you kidding me!"  How about we simple-size this!!  So close to building that TINY HOUSE and hooking it up to the VW bug and boogie on down the highway to whatever green space we have left in this country. On an editorial note..now I hear that the Buffalo Baptist Church just a few miles from our home, is going to be demolished...so those simple days when Blairs Ferry was speckled with old farms are just getting bulldozed away.  It is simply too much for this ol' girl.

Mid-summer I had a little tap on the shoulder and I listened.   I was walking around our property gathering bits of nature to make a wreath.  I looked at my gathering and thought, this is the most beautiful bunch of nature, everything I needed to create a little magic.  I looked at the completed wreath and felt, well, peaceful.   Would the wreath work in a great room of a BIGGY size home...no.  But is sure looked at home in my old 1846 farmhouse, and would look grand in my dream TINY HOUSE.  Guess, you can interpret that tap on my shoulder for yourself.  I just think simple is peaceful.

I have had many opportunities to "pay it forward" at the studio this year.  Yes, we are in business to make money (I have to remind myself of this every day) but I love to surprise our studio friends with a little something... and just being old fashioned in a sweet way.  There...I am going to use that word again...sweet.  It seems to describe a lot that goes on in the studio.  I had lunch with a friend who is in marketing and she asked me to describe the Garden Wren customer. My response was, "creative, loyal, hard working, simple, and SWEET.  She asked about income brackets, age, sex.  I could answer some of that...but seriously our customers are really  sweet.  More often than not, I have used, heard the word sweet to describe something going on in the studio, or someone that has been inside the studio.  (or on most days, the word describes the sweet treats I bring in,  but it is really much more.)

It may be an off the wall business model, but I am going to do it. There have been little signs all year pulling me in this direction.  Here it is...SIMPLY, SWEET, SWEETNESS,  Really wraps up in one little package...why I opened The Garden Wren in the first place.   I want to believe  that in the 10 years since we have opened, we have whispered this little model...but now...that tap on my shoulder tells me we should turn up the volume...in a simply, sweet kinda way.  :)

Life

Five years ago I was lucky enough to design the wedding flowers for my daughter Lindsey.  I worked through the night in my little shop in  Palo.  I searched through my garden and walked up Vinton Street to "heaven on earth",  Kathy Zeller's garden.   We hand selected delicate garden flowers for Lindsey's bouquet.  I think it is one of greatest days of my life.

We wanted the bouquet to "quiver" when Lindsey walked down the isle.  It was a wild bouquet. Fragile, delicate  blossoms that grew carefree in what I believe to be the magical soil on Vinton Street. The bouquet grew. We had to add a little of this and that and a little more of our favorites,  Kiss mees.  But the combination of what mother nature does best was in that bouquet and it did take on a life of it's own.

I honestly can't say I would recommend a mother of the bride to be the floral designer.  I was up on a ladder putting the finishing touches on the arbor when the photographer arrived.    Enough said on that.  But I recall...getting in the photos with shoes on and experiencing a magical moment.  My daughter was going to marry her best friend.

Five years later, I am so thankful to have experienced a couple explore life.  Friends are friends, love is love..and life is life.  You are both the best when you are the partners I designed flowers for five years ago. I hope you always remember that the rare blossoms of nature are wild, fragile, breathtaking and many times hidden.  Think about that for the next five years.   I love you  Maj.

Friends

How many years I have know her?  I don't really know,  But I remember the first time we met.  She was carrying in floral centerpieces for an infant fashion show I was hosting at the Cedar Rapids Country Club.  She was a florist with her own "blossoming" in home studio.  A friend of mine mentioned...you two should meet.  You look alike, have similar styles and LOVE flowers.  And voila!  We met.  We had the same frames for our glasses, finished each others sentences, loved wine, our birthdays are one day apart, and more most importantly....our names are both Cheryl!   We are now friends forever and call each other Cheryl to the 2nd power.

We have raised our children, now have grandchildren, help each other with design as needed and have become soul sisters.

I wish Cheryl peace and thank god that he brought Cheryl into my circle of friends.

Looking forward to many more adventures!
